Last Thursday Katie and Laura from the Library as Incubator Project got to take the show on the road to the Twin Cities! The awesome staff at the Walker Art Center invited us to present a program at Open Field, the Walker’s summertime outdoor art venue and program series.

Art “picnics” are popular with the LAIP team this summer (you’ll see another example of art in the outdoors tomorrow!) so we decided to host an Art + Library Picnic on the Field.

Our “menu” consisted of four book-based creativity exercises that attendees could sample during the two-hour-long event. Some were easy to do on-site (tracing from images and blackout poetry were definitely the favorites), others were intended to be “takeout” items to try at home or the next time one visited their local library. We even had someone stop in and leave behind a book he picked up from a Little Free Library to use in our blackout poetry project.

You can download the Art + Library Picnic Menu here. More exercises along these lines may be found in our book, The Artist’s Library, from Coffee House Press.

Special thanks to Laura Holway and other staff members at the Walker Art Center for inviting us to present this program at Open Field this summer! ~ Laura
