We’ve been in and out for the past week – I bet you have as well! It would be a shame if some of our latest features didn’t get the attention they deserve, so we’re playing fast and loose with dates here.

What’s new around the site:
- Hot on the heels of Christmas, we brought you the Affrilachia in Words and Images exhibition. A great example of unique community collaboration!
- Beautiful illustrations of flora & fauna? YES PLEASE! The Biodiversity Heritage Library is actually a consortium of many natural history and botanical libraries. And they’re on Flickr and Pinterest!
- Filmmaker Josephine Decker used archived radio & news shows as the sound bed for her short film, “Me the Terrible.” And her ideal library sounds amazing!
- MetPublications is an incredible resource for art education, and also just a treasure trove of interesting reading. Learn the ins and outs with Erinn’s feature.
- Books for Quilters on Pinterest – need I say more??? Thanks to the many quilters & librarians who helped build this board!
Happenings in the social media neighborhood:
- An igloo of books is just made of happy. I love Colossal on a normal day, but this takes my love to a whole new level!
- The NY Times recently asked “Do We Still Need Libraries?” in their Room for Debate section. Obviously, we’re a little biased, but an enjoyable read!
- BookPage suggest the 25 Best Book Jackets of 2013 – what do you think?
- Books & Other Geekery – follow them on Tumblr!
Neat things around the web:
- Britain’s first book arts center opens! Huzzah for book arts!
- The world of nerds celebrated J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthday this past week, and Brain Pickings shows off some of his original illustrations for The Hobbit.
- This interview by author Junot Diaz is so. awesome! He talks about libraries as his inspiration (!!), as well as library staff. He’s officially one of my new heroes.
Happy 2013! We hope this new year has dawned bright and shining for all of you. What a grand adventure this year will be!
